What is the PTCB exam?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is the certification test administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) at Pearson VUE test centers. Passing it earns the nationally recognized CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) credential.

How many questions are on the PTCE?

90 multiple-choice questions: 80 scored and 10 unscored pilot questions that are never identified. You have 1 hour and 50 minutes for the exam itself, within a 2-hour appointment that includes a tutorial and survey.

What score do I need to pass the PTCE?

A scaled score of 1,400 on a scale of 1,000 to 1,600. Official results post to your PTCB account within about three weeks; an unofficial result appears on screen immediately after the exam.

What's on the PTCE in 2026?

The content outline effective January 6, 2026 has four domains: Medications (35%), Patient Safety & Quality Assurance (23.75%), Order Entry & Processing (22.5%), and Federal Requirements (18.75%). Note that Federal Requirements grew from 12.5% in the previous outline: older study guides under-weight it.
